Drop-In Digital Photography - Troubleshooting

Richard Mende is a retired professor who has had a passionate interest in photography for over 40 years. He worked for SNAPd Sudbury for 4 years, and he currently works for Talent North. In 2015 he published Mornings in Bell Park, a book of Sudbury photographs.

Once a month he will be available to help you with whatever problems you may be having in the world of digital photography - using your camera, transferring pictures to your computer, file management, editing your pictures, whatever.

Please bring your digital camera and whatever connecting hardware came with it. Bring your manual if you have one and bring your laptop if you have one. Please pre-register for this program.

Computers for Absolute Beginners 

In this two-part class, Pete Marshall will cover the basics of your computer. We will discuss how to work with the desktop, downloading, toolbars and how to connect to the internet. This is for people who either are new to computers, or those who have some basic skills in one or two areas and wish to expand their understanding of their computer. Bring your laptops, mouse and charging cables with you. Windows 7, or Windows 10 computers are fine, but this session is not for iPads or other Tablets. 2

Get the most out of Facebook

Facebook is everywhere and many people use this free social networking service. However there are ways to control who sees your information and who can share it. Peter Marshall will show you how to access all of the settings available in Facebook so that you can be comfortable using it. In addition, we will show you how to access the Facebook page for The ParkSide Centre which is found at https://www.facebook.com/theparksidecentresudbury2/  and our website at www.theparksidecentre.ca. Finally, we will show you how to have our monthly newsletter delivered to you electronically. This is a one-day, 2 hour class led by ParkSide member Peter Marshall.

Tablets

Tablets come in various brands. All Apple brand tablets (and smart phones) use a specific operating system called iOS.  All other brands of tablet (and smart phone) are excluded from iOS and use instead an operating system called Android (from Google); however, manufacturers can and do make minor changes to the user interface.

Peter Marshall will be back to teach you how to download apps, communicating with others via text, email, etc. or managing photos and other files.

Smartphones for Beginners

If you have just updated your mobile phone to a smart phone, you may be a little overwhelmed with all of the new features that are included with your phone. It does not matter if you have an iPhone or some other brand, many details are similar. Let ParkSide member Pete Marshall show you how to get comfortable with your new phone and learn how to download new apps and start using the new features.

Windows 10

Windows 10 is the latest offering from Microsoft and it has been received more favorably than its predecessors Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. There are many new features with this operating system that can make your experience more enjoyable. Participants are required to bring their own laptops. If you don’t already have a mouse, please consider buying one. This is a two day session, each day 1.5 hours.

Instagram

Instagram is a free, online photo sharing application and social network that was purchased by Facebook in 2012. It allows users to upload photos and short videos through a mobile app. This means that you can use virtually any device to access your account. You can ‘Follow’ your friends and family, or follow a group of people that you admire. Their Instagram posts will show up on your feed. Always review what details you are sharing on any Social Media post so we will show you how to be as safe as possible, use appropriate Hashtags, and simply enjoy.

Excel Spreadsheets for Beginners                                                                                                    
Microsoft Excel is a computer program that allows the user to perform a variety of calculations that can be useful in basic home budgeting or for calculations required if you were the treasurer for a community group, church, or if you were monitoring your own investments. 

The program uses a grid of cells in rows and columns that are each able to hold information that can be used in a variety of ways. Learn how to develop a spreadsheet for your home budget and how to enter formulas that automatically perform various mathematical functions. Then you can turn those numbers into an easily viewed graph. No experience is necessary as we will start off with the basics. This is a two-day session, each day 1.5 hours
