Mahjong                                                              NEW!

Mahjong is a game that originated in China. It is commonly played by four players. The game and its regional variants are widely played throughout Eastern and South Eastern Asia and have a small following in Western countries. Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance.

The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols, although some regional variations use a different number of tiles. In most variations, each player begins by receiving 13 tiles. In turn players draw and discard tiles until they complete a legal hand using the 14th drawn tile to form four groups (melds) and a pair (head). There are fairly standard rules about how a piece is drawn, stolen from another player and thus melded, the use of simples (numbered tiles) and honours (winds and dragons), the kinds of melds, and the order of dealing and play.
We have a growing group playing mahjong here at the Parkside Centre. If you are interested in joining, please leave your name and phone number with our Front Desk Volunteer.

Chess is an amazingly simple game to learn but takes a lifetime to master. It took centuries to bring the game to the level it is played today. It is unique in the sense that it is not only a game but also an easy method of exercising your mind. It is art and science. So whether you are a complete beginner or have played for decades, we invite you to come to the Parkside Centre and discover, or master, the "Art”.

Learn to Play Pepper

Pepper is an easy game to learn, but offers opportunities for strategy both in the bidding and the play. In Bid Euchre (Pepper), two decks of cards are used which introduces more opportunities for bidding in which the trump suit is decided by which player can bid to take the most tricks. Bid Euchre is very similar to Euchre, the primary differences being the number of cards dealt, absence of any undealt cards, the bidding and scoring process, and the addition of a no trump declaration.

This game is gaining in popularity at the Parkside Centre.  If you would like to learn how to play Pepper, this program may be perfect for you. Gerry Felice, Parkside Card Committee member will teach you the basics of the game. Contact the front desk to register.
