Merv Gribbons Memorial Invitational Snooker Tournament

Merv Gribbons was a former Board member and Chair of the Parkside Board of Directors. He first joined the Parkside Centre in October of 2001 and almost immediately formed a vision for what is now our Games Room. Knowing the popularity of snooker in the City, he actively raised funds to purchase, transport, install and refurbish three snooker tables which are extremely active and still growing in popularity. Merv passed away on April 17, 2013 as the result of a stroke suffered while he was playing snooker.

The Xstrata Nickel Games Room will again be the site of this fabulous snooker tournament. Some of the finest players in Northern Ontario will be on hand to compete. Spectators are welcome!

Robbie Burns Day

Robert "Robbie" Burns was born on January 25, 1759 into the family of a peasant farmer in southwest Scotland. Burns himself took up farming at a young age and, having no success, he began writing poems for local circulation. Soon, he had them published in a book in the small town of Kilmarnock. Copies of the Kilmarnock edition reached Edinburgh and the intellectuals there were impressed right away. Most of Burn's poems were short, lyrical pieces but they became an instant hit.

Burns is the best known of all of the Scottish poets. He is most admired for having recorded or written the manner of the common person and for his native lyrical understanding. His poems celebrate the natural love between a man and woman, the enjoyment of sociable drinking and the pride of the self-reliant man and woman.

In Scotland, they celebrate the birthday of their national poet, Robbie Burns Day! The Parkside Centre will be celebrating this day with all of the standard fare, including Haggis, Neeps and Tatties and the ParkSide Gang will be here to perform. Stewart Gagan will be here to pipe in the haggis and Don Marr will address it. Tickets are limited so get yours early.

Pancake Tuesday

Pancake Tuesday, also called Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras (which is French for "Fat Tuesday"), is the last day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It's called so because of the tradition of eating pancakes on the day. This tradition comes from a time where rich foods were eaten on the day before Lent, and fasting begins. Get yours at the Parkside on February 13, 2018 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day is an opportunity for people to tell somebody that they love them in a romantic way. It is celebrated on February 14th every year. The Parkside Centre is encouraging people to stretch the celebration out for a couple of days longer this year. The always fantastic band “The Tremonics” will be here to entertain you.
